NIRF 2020 ranking: Top 20 great engineering colleges of India are here
NIRF 2020 ranking has been released in the recent past and that has moved the focus towards reputed educational institutions of higher learning.
While many institutions were ranked across the country, collegechalo has made an attempt to bring into limelight the reputed engineering colleges that have top ranking in NIRF 2020 ranking.
There are seperate rankings for different kinds of higher education institution. NIRF rankings were released for the first time in 2016. From then on they are being released every year.

NIRF 2020 ranking for various institutions was released on June 11 this year.
About 3,800 institutions took part in NIRF 2020 ranking this year which is 20 percent more than what was witnessed in the previous year.
NIRF rankings are awarded by Union Education Ministry of Government of India. This ministry was till recently known as Union Human Resources Development Ministry.
As per NIRF 2020 ranking the top 20 colleges for engineering are given below:
1. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)
This year too IIT Madras located in Chennai in Tamil Nadu got first rank in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).
This is the second consequetive year for this great educational institution to get first rank in NIRF ratings.
The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Professor Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.
IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares.

2. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi)
This prestigious institution located in New Delhi won the second rank in NIRF 2020 ranking. And an overall position of 3 in NIRF 2020 ranking.
This well-known educational institution took up the responsibility of conducting well-known JEE Advanced 2020.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the 23 IITs created to be Centres of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India.
Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared as an Institution of National Importance under the ‘Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963’ and was renamed as ‘Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.’
It was then accorded the status of a Deemed University with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees.
Since its inception, over 48000 have graduated from IIT Delhi in various disciplines including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences.

3. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay)
This prestigious educational institution located in Mumbai in Maharashtra has secured third rank in NIRF 2020 ranking.
The NIRF 2020 ranking gave this prestigious institute the third position. The overall position in NIRF is 4.
Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance.
The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union.
In 1961 Parliament decreed the IITs as ‘Institutes of National Importance’.
Since then, IIT Bombay has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.

4. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur)
This prestigious educational institution located in the heart of Uttar Pradesh has secured sixth rank in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).
IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India.
The aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation.
This prestigious institution is spread across 1055 acres and has over 413 faculty members who teach various subjects.

5. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur)
IIT Kharagpur too stands second to none when it comes to imparting high quality technical education. NIRF 2020 ranking (overall) gave this institute 5th rank.
IIT Kharagpur is located in West Bengal and was established in May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, in the eastern part of India.
Initially the IIT started functioning from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon shifted to Hijli in September 1950.
The present name ‘Indian Institute of Technology’ was adopted before the formal inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
IIT Kharagpur started its journey in the old Hijli Detention Camp where some of our great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country.
There were 224 freshers and 42 teachers in August 1951 when the first session started.
The class rooms, laboratories and the Administrative office wer ehoused in the historic building of the Hijli Detention Camp.
The Institute started its academic programme with only ten Departments.
On March, 1952, Pandit Nehru laid the foundation stone of the New Building.
The layout of the present campus and the design of our buildings were carried out by a host of engineers and architects under the guidance of an eminent Swiss architect Dr. Werner M. Moser.

6. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)
The NIRF 2020 ranking (overall) for this institute located in Roorkee in Uttarakhand is 9. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (abbreviated IIT Roorkee or IITR), formerly University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering, is a public technical and research university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India.
It was established in 1847 in British India by the then Lieutenant Governor Sir James Thomason and it is the second oldest technical institution in Asia.
It was given university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, thus becoming the seventh IIT to be declared.
IIT Roorkee has 22 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.

IIT Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994.
The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes.

8. Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad)
This institute which has won 17th position in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall) is located in Hyderbad the capital of Telangana which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh.
IIT Hyderabad is one among the 2nd generation of IITs started by the Government of India.
Today IIT Hyderabad offers 9 B.Tech programs, 16 M.Tech programs, 3 M.Sc programs, 5 M.Phil programs, 1 M.Des program and Ph.D. programs in all branches of engineering, science, liberal arts and design.
From 14-15 academic year onwards all B.Tech programs started offering courses that are of smaller credits; called the fractal academics; very carefully designed to keep the enthusiasm of the students and to keep them in pace with the state of the art from 1st semester till 8th semester.

9. National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT Tiruchy)
This great institute is located in Tiruchy in Tamil Nadu and has won 24th position in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall) released recently this year. The institution is a name to reckon with when it comes to technical learning.
The institution was established in 1964. Among the popular courses offered by NIT Tiruchy are Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Instrumentation and Control Engineering.
The popular educational institution has more than 12 departments and offers more than 35 courses. Degrees are offered at graduate and post graduate levels.

10. Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore)
The prestigious institution is located in Indore in Madhya Pradesh. NIRF ranking 2020 (overall) gave this institute a position of 23.
In keeping with India’s vision to become a world leader in Science and Technology and to usher in a new revolution, resulting in an unprecedented economic growth, Government of India reassessed the need of technical manpower and decided to set up eight new IITs.
Six of them started functioning back from the academic year 2008-09. These were established at Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Rajasthan, Ropar, Patna and Bhubaneswar. IIT Indore and IIT Mandi started functioning from July 2009.
It is one of the eight new IITs, started by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India), Government of India.
The institution started functioning from 2009-10 in a temporary campus at Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilyabai University under mentorship of IIT Bombay.
Arjun Singh, the former Union HRD minister laid the foundation of the permanent campus, spread over an area of around 501.42-acre (2.1 km2) on 17 February 2009 at Simrol, a location on Khandwa Road about 25 km from the city of Indore.

11. Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varnasi (IIT BHU Varnasi)
Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varnasi is another name to reckon with when it comes to higher learning.
This institution has won 26th rank in the recently released NIRF 2020 ranking (overall). This is located in Varnasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, it became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968.
It was designated an Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. IIT BHU Varnasi has 16 departments, three inter-disciplinary schools and one humanities and social sciences section.

12. Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) (IIT ISM)
This institute is popularly known as Indian School of Mines and also as IIT ISM. Located in Dhanbad in Jharkhand IIT ISM got 22nd rank in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).
The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9 December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology.
In 1967 it was granted the status of a deemed to be university under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956.
Since its establishment, IIT(ISM) has undergone considerable expansion of its activities and presently it can be considered as a total technology education institute.
IIT (ISM) has 18 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management programs.

13. National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT Karnataka)
NIRF 2020 ranking (overall) gave this well-know educational institution from Karnataka 33rd position. This well-known insitution is located at Surathkal in Mangalore in Karnataka.
This institution was formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC).
It was founded in 1960 as KREC while today, it is one of the 32 National Institutes of Technology in India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
It has a suburban campus, in close proximity to the Arabian Sea. National Highway 66 runs through the campus and serves as the major mode of access.
NIT Karnataka offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science and Management.
The institute has 14 departments and 11 support centres with about 200 faculty members, 300 support staff and 26,500 alumni worldwide.

14. Anna University
This is again one among the well-known educational institutions imparting technical education in Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Anna University has won the position of 20 in NIRF ranking 2020 (overall).
Anna University was established on 4 September, 1978 as a unitary type of University.
This university was named after Late Dr.C.N.Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Applied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.
This was formed by bringing together and integrating four well-known technical institutions in the city of Chennai which are College of Engineering Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology, Madras Institute of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning.

This was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by G. Viswanathan. As time moved ahead, this reputed educational institution expanded its presence to various parts of India.
It currently offers 20 undergraduate, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs.
The educational institution usually conducts an entrance exam to admit students in various courses offered by it.
This educational institution won 28th position in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).

16. National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela)
NIT Rourkela located in Rourkela in Odisha has won the position of 32 in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).
NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on 15 August 1961.
Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik provided the land for it, approximately 648 acres.
Its foundation stone was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
It was granted autonomy in 2002 and now functions independently under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, thus becoming one of the National Institutes of Technology.
The institute is managed by a Board of Governors (BoG) created as per NIT Act of 2007.
The Act is responsible for the overall superintendence, direction, and control of its affairs.
This institution houses nearly 20 departments that offer BTech, BArch, M.Tech, MSc and Integrated MSc and MBA and PhD programmes.

17. Jadavpur University
This university has is located in Kolkata in West Bengal and is a public research university established in 1905.
Currently this well-known educational institution has won the 12th position in NIRF 2020 ranking (overall).
Jadavpur University has successfully established itself as a foremost Indian University with a vast repertoire of courses offered, an enviable list of faculty members and has come to be known for its commitment towards advanced study and research.

18. Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT)
Established on October 1, 1933 as University Department of Chemical Technology (popularly called UDCT) of the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) with the noble intention of advancing India’s knowledge reserves in chemical science and technology, the Institute has grown to become a premier (deemed) university devoted to education, training, research and industrial collaboration in chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology and bio-processing.
Based on its stellar performance over the years, the Government of Maharashtra granted it the Elite Status and Centre of Excellence in the State Assembly on April 20, 2012.

National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT Warangal or NITW) is a public technological university located in Warangal in Telangana.
It is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
The foundation stone for this institute was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 1959, the first in the chain of 32 NITs (formerly known as RECs) in the country.
The institute was renamed as the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in 2002.
In 1994, the institute was selected by the Overseas Development Administration of the UK for exchange programs between the UK and India in the field of information technology. This program ran till 1999.

20. Amrita School of Engineering
Is a group of engineering colleges in India under the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a private deemed university.
Amrita School of Engineering is spread across four campuses in Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Chennai and Coimbatore.
The schools offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various engineering disciplines.
The schools were founded by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi in 1994, and are managed by her international humanitarian organisation Mata Amritanandamayi Math.
