NEET UG 2024 Counselling to Begin in July, Centre Informs Supreme Court
The Centre informed the Supreme Court that NEET UG counselling 2024 will begin in the third week of July.
The Centre informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that there was no evidence of “mass malpractice” or a specific set of candidates benefiting, resulting in aberrant NEET UG 2024 results. It stated that IIT Madras conducted data analytics on the NEET UG 2024 results, and according to the experts’ findings, the marks distribution followed the bell-shaped curve seen in any large-scale examination, showing no irregularity. The Center stated in an additional statement submitted to the Supreme Court that, beginning in the third week of July, four rounds of counselling will be held for undergraduate seats in 2024–25. In the meantime, the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the esteemed exam, also submitted a second, supplemental document to the highest court, claiming to have examined the distribution of scores in NEET UG 2024 at the federal, state, local, and centre levels.
The NTA said in its affidavit, which included information about the mechanism in place to guarantee the confidential printing of question papers, “This analysis indicates that the distribution of marks is quite normal and there seems to be no extraneous factor, which would influence the distribution of marks,”
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud’s bench is set to hear several pleas regarding the contentious NEET UG 2024 medical admission exam on Thursday. These pleas include those claiming malpractices and irregularities occurred in the test administered on May 5 and requesting an order to retake it. The Supreme Court noted that the sanctity of NEET-UG 2024 had been “breached” during its July 8 hearing.
The Center stated in its supplemental affidavit, which was submitted on Wednesday, that the Ministry of Education had asked the Director of IIT Madras to conduct thorough data analytics of the results of candidates who took the NEE UG 2024 exam, per the highest court’s directive. “It is submitted that pursuant thereto an exhaustive and elaborate technical evaluation of the data about the NEET UG 2024 examination was carried out by IIT Madras, using the parameters like marks distribution, city-wise and centre-wise rank distribution and candidates spread over marks range, and the experts of the IIT Madras have given the following findings…,” it stated.
Results of NEET UG 2024 from IIT Madras
According to the affidavit, the results of IIT Madras indicate that there are no abnormalities, with the marks distribution following the bell-shaped curve that is observed in any large-scale examination. Citing the conclusions of the IIT Madras specialists, the report stated, “The analysis shows that there is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localized set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores.” According to the affidavit, the IIT Madras specialists’ results indicate that there has been an overall increase in student marks, specifically in the 550–720 range. This increase has been observed in all cities and centres.
The Center stated that starting in the third week of July, there will be four rounds of the counselling procedure in 2024–2025. “For any candidate, if it is found that he/she has been the beneficiary of any malpractice, the candidature of such person would be cancelled at any stage during the counselling process or even afterwards,” stated the statement.
The Center stated that to guarantee that future examination procedures are more resilient and impervious to malpractice, it has formed a high-level expert committee to provide recommendations for practical steps that will enable the NTA to conduct transparent, efficient, and equitable examinations.
On May 5, 23,33,00 students at 4,750 centers in 571 cities—including 14 international cities—took the NEET-UG 2024. In their previous declarations submitted to the Supreme Court, the NTA and the Center stated that, in the absence of any evidence of a widespread breach of confidentially, eliminating the exam would be “counterproductive” and “seriously jeopardize” lakhs of sincere applicants. The NTA administers the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) to applicants for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other relevant programs in public and private universities around the nation.
Conclusion
The NEET UG 2024 counselling process is set to start in the third week of July, as confirmed by the Centre to the Supreme Court. Despite allegations of malpractice, thorough data analysis by IIT Madras has validated the integrity of the NEET UG 2024 results, showing no irregularities.
With over 23 lakh students taking the exam across multiple centres, the NTA and Centre ensure a transparent and equitable admission process. The Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing will address pending pleas, aiming to resolve any concerns regarding the exam’s sanctity. The Centre’s commitment to enhancing examination procedures further ensures the reliability of future NEET UG assessments.
