1. SRMIST student in sports
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) turned into centre of attraction when one of its student Nethra Kumanan became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics.
Sources keeping track of education news say Nethra will be representing India in sailing by confirming her berth in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics recently.
Nethra qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by coming first at the Laser Radial event in the Mussanah Open Championship which is a joint Asian and African Olympic qualifying event.
A second-year engineering student of SRM, she has represented the country at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games in Incheon and Jakarta, respectively.
She became the first Indian woman to win a World Cup medal in sailing when she clinched a bronze medal at 2020 Sailing World Cup in Miami, USA.
She will now become the first Indian woman sailor to represent the country at the Olympics.
This 23-year-old professional sailor is a resident of Chennai and has made her Institution proud.
She trains in the Canary Islands, Spain.
2. CBSE board exams cancellation
The demand to cancel CBSE board exams for classes 10 and 12 seems to be growing.
Needless to say, this is one education news in this country that managed to garner great deal of attention.
The upward move of second wave of corona cases has perhaps motivated many students and parents to seek cancellation of board exams.
Parents and students say the exams could be conducted online if cancellation is not possible.
Sources tracking education news says the hashtag ‘cancelboardexams2021’ has become a trend on Twitter.
Many students have put forward the need to cancel exams through attractive messages.
This only shows there is a significant demand to cancel exams for 10th and 12th classes in CBSE stream.
However, CBSE on the other hand has assured that all precautions will be followed.
Sources keeping track of education news say the plan is to increase the number of exam centres by about 50 percent.
This is to ensure norms like social distancing can be adhered to.
Students who applied online through the application portal ‘www.mahindrauniversity.edu.in’ by 9 April were considered for the first round of counselling.
Sources familiar with education news say the admissions into engineering were based on the score in February edition of JEE Mains 2021.
ECSE-MU has a total of about 720 seats in its B.Tech. programme for nine academic disciplines – Artificial Intelligence, Civil Engineering, Computation & Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and NanoTechnology.
Those students who have a 10+2 or equivalent qualification from any statutory board with 60% aggregate marks in all subjects or equivalent grade for the students from IB or other approved Boards are eligible to apply for admission.
The admissions was to be granted on the basis of either JEE Mains or Valid SAT Subject Test Scores (which should include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) – minimum 1800.
4. IIIT Delhi invites applications
IIIT Delhi is inviting applications for M.Tech in CSE and CB.
Sources familiar with education news say there are about 149 seats in CSE branch totally.
And about 110 of them are reserved for those who qualified GATE exam. MTech in CB has 28 seats totally.
Sources familiar with education news and related developments say applicants should apply on or before 5 pm of April 20.
Individuals willing to apply for MTech in CSE must have passed BE or BTech or MCA or MSc in Computer Science or Information Technology or any other allied subjects with 65 percent passmarks.
Even candidates who have passed GATE exam in CS paper can also apply for MTech CSE.
Applicants for MTech CB must have passed BE or BTech in Computer Science,IT or Math and Computing.
Applicants who have passed MCA or MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Biomedical sciences can apply.
Even students who have studied BDS, MBBS or B.Pharma can also apply, say sources tracking education news in India.
However, applicants must have studied one computer science course and atleast two mathematics courses during their degree study time or from a recognised institution or online education portal.
This is also a worth noting education news from Chhattishgarh. The exams for 10th standard were supposed to take place from April 15 to May 1.
The decision to conduct exams on another date has been taken keeping in view the spike in corona cases.
Sources tracking developments related to academics and education news say there is no change with regards to schedule of class 12 board exams.
Class 12 board exams will be conducted from 3 to 24 May. The decision about class 10 exams will be announced later, say sources tracking education news.
6. AMU cancels test
There is yet another education news worth noting in the recent times.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has cancelled admission test taking into consideration the rising COVID-19 cases.
Education news sources say the entrance test was supposed to be conducted from June 20 to July 11.
However that would not take place now as COVID cases are on rise across the country.
The sources tracking education news say AMU will inform about the new schedule for admission exams in due course of time.
AMU conducts test to provide admission into it for engineering, graduate and postgraduate courses. The test is conducted in an offline mode across seven centres in the country.
