JNU Considers Reinstating JNUEE for PhD Admissions: Decision Pending
According to the JNU teachers’ association, decisions were made on July 3 to allow for the potential reinstatement of JNUEE for PhD admissions.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) asserted on Thursday that by choosing not to use UGC NET results, the university has allowed itself to consider the option of reintroducing the previous system and holding its entrance exams for PhD admissions. However, according to JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, no decision has been made yet and the administration has simply asked for ideas from the relevant parties.
Assuming that JNU will no longer use the UGC NET scores for PhD admissions is premature. Because it will take some time for NTA to announce the entrance exam results, and because of this, our PhD admissions are being delayed, we have only accepted comments from the stakeholders. She informed PTI, “This is also why our JRF students’ fellowship is currently, delayed. “However, implementing the previous entrance system will require some thought due to practical concerns and that will take some time. As of yet, no decision has been made. Should this happen again, the university website will be informed,” she continued.
JNUEE PhD Admission on Hold
The JNUTA stated on Thursday that decisions were made to explore the possibility of bringing back the former JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for PhD admissions during a meeting of the vice-chancellor and school deans on July 3. “JNUTA considers this to be a vindication of its long-standing position on the matter of entrance examinations as well as a positive response to the specific demand raised by it after the cancellation of the June 2024 UGC-NET Examination,” said the letter. It claimed that the JNU’s decision to switch to using UGC-NET scores for JNUEE PhD admissions in 2024–2025 was “imposed” and not the result of discussions among faculty members or other university authorities.

Conclusion
The potential reinstatement of the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for PhD admissions has become a topic of discussion following the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association’s (JNUTA) assertion and a recent meeting involving the vice-chancellor and school deans. While JNUTA views this exploration as a positive response to their long-standing demands, JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit emphasized that no final decision has been made. The administration is currently seeking feedback from stakeholders and weighing practical considerations before any changes are implemented. Students and faculty are advised to stay updated through official university communications for further developments on this matter.
