IIT Guwahati signs MoU with great IIT (BHU)
IIT Guwahati has once again become the cynosure of all eyes as it signed an MoU with IIT (BHU) to offer doctoral programmes.
The Memorandum-of-Understanding (MoU) was signed on 27 November by Professor T.G. Sitharam and Professor Pramod Kumar Jain on behalf of IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) respectively.
As per the MoU, IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) will offer joint doctoral programme in July next year.
Directors of IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) said it is for the first time in the country that two IITs have come together to offer a joint degree programme.
IIT Guwahati signs MoU with great IIT (BHU)
The idea of a joint PhD programme was originally proposed by Director of IIT Guwahati during the 53rd IIT Council Meeting held on 27 September 2019.
The vision behind this is to build a network of excellence of all IITs rather than each one striving to become a tower of excellence.
The IIT Council accepted the proposal to start joint degree programs.
Through this academic collaboration, both IIT Guwahati and IIT (BHU) are expecting significant boost in high quality research and foundation for further academic collaborations.
IIT (BHU) is considering starting a joint MTech program on similar lines to provide multi-institutional and multidisciplinary MTech programs.
IIT Guwahati has also agreed to be part of this initiative.
Admission to PhD programme
IIT Guwahati invites online applications from eligible candidates for PhD admissions for sessions that begin from January next year under project mode category.
Departments of Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Design (DD), Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME) at IIT Guwahati will take PhD students under DST sponsored National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS mission) project on Technologies for Underwater Exploration.
Candidates with relevant background in the above mentioned disciplines having interest in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, control system, underwater manufacturing may apply for PhD programme at IIT Guwahati.
Students who are admitted into the doctoral programmes through this category in IIT Guwahati will be funded through sponsored research projects of IIT Guwahati.
The students will work under the supervision of Principal Investigator (PI)/Co-Investigator (Co-PI) of the projects for their PhD theses.
The students will not do teaching assistance duties; rather they will be working for the projects.
The application registration for the admission into doctoral programmes under this category began on 17 November, the last date to register for this programme is 5 pm of 1 December.
Applications are to be submitted online for the PhD programmes at IIT Guwahati.
If the candidate wishes to apply to more than one department, he or she can do it with the same registration.
However, they need to pay application fee separately for each Department.
They can click the button and soon after the webpage downloads, they can click button ‘Register’ to begin online registration.
‘Register’ would be on the right side top corner next to big IIT Guwahati banner.
Post registration, candidates can start applying. While those who are already registered, can click ‘Login’ button located before the ‘Register’ button and begin applying.
After registration, candidates have to pay the application fee. Application fee is Rs 150 for female, transgender, SC/ST/PwD category candidates. For all others, it is Rs 300.
