COVID-19: Learn from home, thanks to IIT-K
COVID-19 out break is causing panic across the globe and India is no exception to it. Right from economy to academics, things at most places have come to standstill owing to COVID-19.
Amidst such a concern causing situation due to COVID-19 outbreak, Centre for Continuing Education of
IIT-Kanpur has come up with a noble initiative of enabling school children to learn lessons of physics even as they stay at home.
Centre for Continuing Education has come up with a special course on physics offered by Dr. H.C. Verma which can be taken by school students to physics educators. The course is Stay Home and Revise Physics on the theme ‘Learning Physics with simple Experiments.’
Such initiatives are winning the hearts of all for they are ensuring students do not stop their regular lessons amidst troublesome situations created by conditions like COVID-19.
Highlights
The course will start from 2 April 2020. It will be a 24 hour lecture course spread over about two months. Each lecture will have about two to four physics experiments followed by detailed explanation.
Most of the experiments can be assembled and performed by even a children of 13 years of age onwards. The explanation may be at the level of Plus-two and in certain cases it may be above that.
Requirement
One needs a desktop, laptop, mobile phone or tablet with a internet connection to do study the course.
Point to remember
About three lectures will be uploaded per week on the average on the course website ‘https://phy.hcverma.in‘ Participants can ask questions to Dr H.C. Verma by texting on mobile phone. Replies can also be given by the fellow participants.
Certificates will be given based on the attendance of the candidates (viewing of full lectures) by Centre of Continuing Education in IIT Kanpur.
How to register
Open the website ‘phy.hcverma.in‘ in the computer and one can see how to register. Applicants must click on sign in/signup. As soon as the next screen appears, candidates must click ‘create new account.’
A form will appear on the screen, candidates must fill in the form and submit it. Candidates will receive One Time Password (OTP) after submission on their email.
Candidates must enter OTP and then click ‘reset your password’ and click on ‘verify and set password’ After that, registration will be done.
Post registration, candidates can go anytime to phy.hcverma.in and sign in by providing user id and password and then take part in lectures and forum discussion.

The first case of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in India was reported on 30 January 2020, originating from China.
As of 4 April 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have confirmed a total of 2,902 cases, 184 recoveries (including 1 migration) and 68 deaths in the country.
Experts suggest the number of infections could be a substantial underestimate, as India’s testing rates are among the lowest in the world.
The infection rate of COVID-19 in India is reported to be 1.7, significantly lower than in the worst affected countries.
The outbreak has been declared an epidemic in more than a dozen states and union territories, where provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 have been invoked, and educational institutions and many commercial establishments have been shut down.
India has suspended all tourist visas, as a majority of the confirmed cases were linked to other countries. With regards to COVID-19, On 22 March 2020, India observed a 14-hour voluntary public curfew at the instance of the prime minister Narendra Modi.
The government followed it up with lockdowns in 75 districts where COVID cases had occurred as well as all major cities.
Further, on 24 March, the prime minister ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, affecting the entire 1.3 billion population of India.
