Union Education Minister Defends Veer Savarkar College Naming, Empowers Girl Students at Delhi University
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday defended Delhi University Vice Chancellor for making the varsity’s new college Veer Savarkar. He accused critics of the name, who expressed objections to his name, that they have adopted a “colonial mindset.” On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh.

“Savarkar was a great nationalist, but there is a section of society with a colonial mindset that has objections to the DU college being named after him. I want to thank the DU Vice Chancellor for dedicating the new college in his name,” Pradhan said.
Speaking on the occasion ‘Sashakt Beti and e-Drishti’ held at Delhi University to empower the deprived sections of society through technology, the education minister distributed laptops and tablets among the girl students.
During the event, Pradhan handed over laptops and tablets to orphaned girl students, daughters of single parents, and visually impaired students at university. An advanced life support ambulance was also donated by the LIC Golden Jubilee Foundation. On the occasion, a book, “Commemorative Volume of Donor’s Chronicle 2024,” was released. The book presents the contributions made by donors to the university.
The guest of honour was BJP MP Manoj Tiwari. Pradhan also urged the university to collect donations from its alumni network through the University of Delhi Foundation group, which helped distribute the laptops.
DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh in his address highlighted the importance of “dharma” or righteousness in education. Reciting a Sanskrit shloka, he said, “Dharma is important.
