IIT Guwahati and Mizoram Univ to develop great teaching programmes
IIT Guwahati will collaborate with Mizoram University in joint development of teaching programmes.
Both the institutions will also cooperate in education and R & D activities besides promoting the exchange of students.
Professor T.G. Sitharam, director of IIT Guwahati and Professor K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University signed an MoU towards this collaboration on behalf of both the organisations.
IIT Guwahati and Mizoram University signed the MoU on 26 July in the presence of Professor A. S. Achalkumar, Dean (Outreach Education Programme), IIT Guwahati and Dr. N. Mohondas Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Mizoram University.

Professor Sitharam highlighted about the unique aspects about the collaboration between IIT Guwahati and Mizoram University.
This is a memorable day for both the institutions to advance the research and academic collaborations and to emerge as winners which will serve the larger cause of the North-east India, said Professor T.G. Sitharam.
IIT Guwahati and Mizoram University will encourage contact and cooperation between their faculty members, departments and research facilities.
Students would be encouraged to attend courses offered by the partner institutions and collaborate in research projects.
Professor Sambasiva Rao speaking about the collaboration with IIT Guwahati said signing this MoU is an important step in advancing the relationship for both institutes and providing a valuable opportunity for the students of Mizoram University and facilitating the cooperation in teaching and research areas of mutual interest.
It will help the students further to get exposure in advanced instrumentation and facilities available at IIT Guwahati and will be having good scope and opportunities for fulfilling their academic zeal, said Professor Sambasiva Rao.
IIT Guwahati was founded in 1994, is well-equipped with world-class infrastructure to with a global research ranking of 41 and an overall ranking of 395 in world.
Mizoram University was created by an Act of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and it became functional from 2nd July 2001.
MZU (Mizoram University) was accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC in 2014 and 2019. It was also awarded ISO Certificate in 2018.
The University was ranked as one of the top 100 Universities in India, assessed by the NIRF rankings from 2016 to 2020 under Ministry of Human Resources Development of Government of India.
Brahmaputra Board
IIT Guwahati and Brahmaputra Board are going to collaborate to address river related issues and also how to utilize rivers more efficiently for people’s benefit.
The collaboration between Brahmaputra Board and IIT Guwahati will help to evolve with innovative technology which will help for better management of river like Brahmaputra.
It is a partnership of experimental and computational study along with promoting academic visits of students and officials for the mutual benefit of stakeholders.
Chairman of Brahmaputra Board Rajiv Yadav and IIT Guwahati director Professor T.G. Sitharam signed the MoU towards this collaboration on behalf of both the organisations.
Professor A.S. Achal Kumar, Dean (Outreach Education Programme) IIT Guwahati, Professor Arup Kumar Sarma, IIT Guwahati and Mr. Ranjit Deka, Director, NEHARI were also present during the signing of MoU.
Speaking about the collaboration between IIT Guwahati and Brahmaputra Board said management of a complex river like Brahmaputra is possible only through collaborative approach of academia and Industry, and this is a step towards this.
A MoU between IIT Guwahati and North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Institute (NEHARI) will create a synergy in the field of research and allied activities relating to basin, flood and river bank management.
IIT Guwahati being a premier institute of technology with active faculty and research scholars, it will be a fruitful collaboration in the areas of hydrological model of study and research.
Rajiv Yadav said North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Institute (NEHARI) under Brahmaputra Board after renovation of its laboratories and establishment of updated hydrological laboratories on model studies, spanning over an area of about 44-hectare land is now only the second laboratory of the country after Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune.
Professor Arup Kumar Sarma, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati said IIT Guwahati has a world class computation capability to carryout mathematical model study of complex river to evaluate impacts of various potential management measures and hence to provide most optimal solution, Brahmaputra Board has field experience and a world class experimental facility.
He further added, recently IIT Guwahati has developed its indigenous river model BRAHMA (Braided River Aid: Hydro-Morphological Analyzer) through a collaborative project with Brahmaputra Board and this MoU will facilitate its speedy field implementation.
The Brahmaputra Board was constituted in 1980 by an Act of Parliament Brahmaputra Board Act, 1980 (No. 46 of 1980) under List 56 of Schedule 7 of article 246 of the Constitution of India.
It was recently renovated and inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Jal Shakti on 14th January, 2021.
The Chairman, Brahmaputra Board and the Director Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati had a discussion and both the Institutes agreed to undergo on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation between the two Institutes.
