Chhath Puja: Since it is a public holiday all the government and private schools, and colleges will remain closed in Delhi.
On the day of Chhath Puja, Chief Minister Atishi declared a public holiday on November 7 today. The declaration came only hours after Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena requested the Chief Minister to declare a public holiday on November 7. Since it is also a public holiday, there will be no classes or any work in all Delhi government, private schools, and colleges.
Chhath is one of the major Hindu festivals across the state of Bihar as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh. Making the declaration via X, Atishi put forth, “I am happy to inform you that the Delhi government has now decided to declare November 7 a holiday on the festival of Chhath so that all our brothers and sisters of Purvanchal can celebrate it with pomp and show”.
She also shared her signed order regarding the decision. “Chhath Puja is an important festival for the people of NCT of Delhi. Accordingly, the Government of NCT of Delhi has decided to declare November 7, 2024, as a public holiday on account of ‘Chhat Puja,” the order read.
Early during the day, Raj Niwas Delhi had written through a post on X saying, “Hon’ble Lt Governor has written to Hon’ble CM requesting her to move the file declaring November 7th, 2024 a public holiday on account of Chhath Puja”.
This is the festival for the adoration of the sun god. It has people under a very strict routine of four days of festivities. The rituals include abstinence, prayer to the sun while rising and sun while it is setting, holy bathing, and standing in water with meditation.
This declaration of November 7 as a public holiday by the Delhi government in celebration of Chhath Puja is an act of great importance toward acknowledging the cultural importance that the festival holds for the Purvanchal community. The city brings all its diverse communities together by respecting their traditions and celebrations during Chhath Puja, thus fostering unity and respect. By closed schools, colleges, and offices, families, and friends can immerse themselves in the rituals, thus reminding them of the bonding strength that connects them to the roots and the spirit of devotion.
