Vivekananda College came into existence in 1950. The initial name of this college is Barisha College. This college got established under the Dispersal Scheme of the State Government. It was launched initially as the intermediate college but now it has established itself as the full fledged college. The objective of the college with which it was established was to bring the advancement of learning. They strongly manifest the spirit of Education for Empowerment.
The history of the college says that right from the inception of this college, they have engaged in helping thousand of young people. The people who have migrated from East Pakistan or people who belonged to the backward communities of the area were also helped by the organisation in many ways. The thought of the college is 'Tomoso ma jyotirgamoy' which means 'from darkness, lead us to the light’.
The college is situated in Thakurpukur, Kolkata. On an average, the college takes admissions of more than 700 students every year. The college presently offers UG and PG level courses. The college also has seats reserved for SC, ST, OBC and physically handicapped candidate in all the courses. It is a private college that offers enough scholarships for the students to make their lives easier as well. All the courses they offer are on the general and honours level.
The college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and has approvals by NAAC with an A grade. Vivekananda College has been ranked No. 1 in Science Stream in Kolkataas well as in the Eastern Region. The institute was also ranked 28th in Science Stream at the National Level.
