Vinayaka Mission's Medical College (VMMC) was established in 1996 by Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram, a visionary philanthropist and educationist who founded Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (VMRF) - Deemed to be University. VMMC is located in Karaikal and is known for its commitment to education and healthcare.
In 2003, VMMC received permanent recognition from the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Ministry of Health, Government of India. This recognition was renewed in 2010, highlighting the college's adherence to the standards set by the MCI.
VMMC offers a range of postgraduate courses recognized by the Medical Council of India, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Dermatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Biochemistry, Radiology, and various postgraduate diploma courses. These courses provide students with specialized knowledge and skills in their respective fields.
The college is affiliated with Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (VMRF), which is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and FAIMER - International Medical Education Directory (IMED). The institution is also approved and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
VMMC is managed by notable individuals such as Dr. A.S. Ganesan (Hon'ble Chancellor), Dato's Sri Dr. S. Sharavanan (Pro Chancellor VMRF - DU), Mr. N.V. Chandrasekar (Vice-President), Mrs. Arunadevi Chandrasekar (Trustee), and Mrs. Annapoorani Shanmugasundaram (Trustee). Their guidance and support contribute to the academic development and adoption of modern medical technology for providing advanced healthcare services to the people of Karaikal and surrounding areas.
VMMC's hospital, with 590 beds, is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic departments to offer comprehensive healthcare services. The hospital participates in special healthcare schemes such as the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) and provides ESI facilities. The college campus, spread over 70 acres, provides students and faculty with facilities such as museums, laboratories, air-conditioned library and skill labs, Wi-Fi access, online library resources, 24/7 emergency care, counseling services, research facilities, gymnasiums in hostels, and sports grounds.
During its establishment, VMMC was one of the pioneering medical colleges in rural India, aiming not only to provide education but also to serve as a healthcare provider for the rural population of South India.
