Shri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research was established in 1985 by Shri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust as a not-for-profit self-financing institution. It had its origin as Shri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI). In 1994, the government of India declared SRMC & RI as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
In 2006, the nomenclature of the institution was changed to Shri Ramachandra University, as notified by the UGC and afterwards to SRMC & RI (DU) in 2017. Now, the name of DU has been changed to Shri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.
