Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee was established in 1847 by the then governor, Sir James Thomson. It was given university status in 1949 and was converted to an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on September 21, 2001, by an Ordinance issued by the Government of India, thus making it the 7th IIT, an Institute of National Importance. It is the oldest technical institution in Asia and ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world. IIT offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning and has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres. The admission to B.Tech and B.Arch course is based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centres all over India.
